The SHAMROCK Project Our original Shamrock mold was made off of a hand made wooden model. Although it was an excellent model, the very nature of wood boats over time causes some deflection in the hull shape. This means that our original mold had the same hull shape deformities as the wood model. The time had come to produce a new mold. the following pictures show the progress and the process of the new Shamrock V. |

| These first two photos show a new plug made from our original mold. Primer was first sprayed into the mold, followed by many layers of fiberglass. The final part is between 3/16" and 1/4" thick. | |||

The process of fairing begins by correcting the keel fin that was slightly off center. This was determined by a laser level mounted to the ceiling. Both sides of the keel were cut diagonally leaving only a small amount attached at the centerline. The keel was then pulled slightly to one side until it was perfectly centered, then bonded back in place. Next, the entire hull was worked over, filling the lows, sanding down the highs. At this point it is time to check the deck centerline again. |

| To check the deck centerline, I cut out a plywood deck and used my laser level to find the exact center. Then I measured out from the centerline on both the port and starboard sides every 6" to confirm the deck was symetrical. | |||

The plywood sub-deck is then inserted into the hull and held in place with Bondo. Then the shear line can be shaped and adjusted until it is correct.

I have to get back to work now - we are much further along than this! As soon as I get a chance I'll continue the Shamrock story. There are lots more pictures for me to post. Check back in a few days.... Adrian |
